While there are multiple theories of how primitive humans began having sex, the most logical explanation involves instinct and the scientific need to procreate. This does not mean that it wasn’t viewed as a pleasurable act or that there was no experimenting with sexualities and genders at the time. All it means is that there is no explanation or evidence of the same indicating relations with similar sex individuals. The evidence available at the time is relatively limited, but to one's imagination, we can take inspiration from the movie -The Blue Lagoon. While scientifically flawed, it explores the themes of what life may have been like during those times. DNA tests provided by fossils tell us that incest was rather common. We also know that it was carried on till the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was preferred so that the woman could maintain good relationships with her family as well as that of her in-laws. Passing down traditions and maintenance of family wealth were also factors in the same. With the prevalence of royalty and nobility, these values became exceedingly important. The most important of them is birthing an heir, specifically male. It was during this time that women were limited to being possessions of the men they were married to. They weren’t given any real duties or respect. It was rather depressing. Unfortunately, it was also a time where a woman’s worth was determined by her beauty, virginity, and ability to birth sons. If she was fair and beautiful, she had the potential to get married into a good family. If she was a virgin it did not increase her value, but if she wasn’t, it decreased her value as she was considered to be a whore and there was a possibility that the child she would bear may not be her husband’s, but instead what was known as a bastard or illegitimate child. As it was her primary duty, the focus shifted away from the prospect of same-sex and pleasurable sex became nearly fiction. The only available pleasurable sex was that which was available for a price or by the assertion of dominance and ignorance of lack of consent such as prostitution hubs and taverns and rape and assault. Many royal women were subject to rape and marital rape as the men wanted to “teach them a lesson” or “put them in their place” to assert dominance and power. Two examples of the same are Queen Mary of Scott’s rape by Bothwell her husband. Her mother-in-law from her first marriage Catherine De Medici was also a victim to the same. She was a merchant’s daughter who is said to have been raped on multiple occasions at a brothel. Queen Mary was also unable to bear an heir which caused all the more outrage in her husband's family. We have graduated from sex being a product of curiosity to it determining the value of an individual to it being a point of dominance. It is still considered taboo in many countries and cultures all around the world. However, in more developed cultures, we are beginning to spread awareness of all its aspects. We might have come a long way from the old school of thought but we still have a long way to go.
