Netflix Representation About Sex Education and why it’s important (Reference-Sex Education)

Sex has always been considered a taboo topic of conversation. We have never really seen open discussion, or accurate representation regarding it, but that was before shows like ‘Sex Education’ made their debut. They have started new conversations concerning sexuality, gender and sexual identities, and sex education. The show openly and unabashedly represents a variety of experiences and identities, which helps thousands of viewers feel seen and important. The show explores topics like sexual and emotional boundaries, female masturbation, and sexual trauma. Scenes that examine topics like these are casually educational, fulfilling the title of the show by answering questions teenage viewers may have shamefully wondered about in private. They show us how the students navigate their sexual and romantic relationships through high school. The most remarkable factor is the diversity that we see, including their sexualities, disabilities, ethnicities and, socio-economic statuses. For a show focused on sex, the diversity of sexualities represented is where the show really shines. In addition to portraying lesbian, pansexual, gay, and bisexual characters, lesser-known sexualities like asexuality are also depicted. Through its many characters, Sex Education briefly touches on stuff like gender identities, masturbation, disability, addiction, infidelity, fetishes, and insecurity, but it does so cleverly and never feels like a lecture. The reason this show has won all our hearts is that we can see ourselves reflected in the characters, we empathize and connect with them on a personal level, we are provided reassurance that would make any person questioning their sexuality feel valid—a key reason why on-screen representation is so important. The show also has an accurate representation of sex education or rather the lack of it. The show through the topic ‘chlamydia outbreak’ portrayed the lack of awareness regarding sexual health and diseases. Sex education is acquiring information about the development of our bodies, sexuality, sex, and sexual behaviour. Sex education aids people to get the information, motivation, and abilities to make the right decisions about sex and sexuality. Teenagers need this kind of information to make the right choices and protect themselves. There is controversy in whether sex education should be taught at schools, and often they teach abstinence only, but the fact that teens are not aware of this information leads to them making bad decisions on account of their ignorance. It is necessary to be educated about these things because they play a very important part in who we are and who we will be. In conclusion, sex education is extremely necessary for teenagers to be informed and make the right decisions. Teens need the opportunity to make choices considering all the factors involved, and with sex education, they get that opportunity. Teens are most likely to engage in sexual activity anyway, so it is way better if they have their facts straight. This way they don’t go in blind. Sex and sexuality can be scary to teens when they are uncertain. Accurate depiction in media about this helps create awareness and create a conducive, safe environment for teenagers.
