Famous actress Mae West once said, “Sex is an emotion in motion”. Human beings have a general tendency of expressing their feelings towards someone through their actions. For some it might be buying gifts for their significant other, for some, it may be touch and for some, it might be sex. Then why is sex considered such a taboo, even today in the “forward” modern world? Sex is supposed to be sacred, a union between two people. A way to express your attraction and feelings towards each other. Due to it being regarded as a taboo, so many children in today’s world feel uncomfortable talking to their parents about their sexuality and they end up having a very awkward “birds and bees” talk. Abraham Maslow was a psychologist who had come up with a hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization. He had made a pyramid with the priority of the needs increasing as you went downwards. According to him, the eight most primary needs are air, food, drink, warmth, sex, sleep, etc. If we believe in this hierarchy of needs, we cannot fulfill our other needs unless all our primary needs are fulfilled. I am not implying that without sex, we’ll always feel unsatisfied. It depends from person to person whether they want to indulge in it. But labelling it as immoral and vile is wrong. Indian culture has slowly impregnated this vicious mindset onto people and it has been passed down from several generations. Virginity is a very delicate topic and those who aren’t virgins, especially girls before they’re married, are termed shameful rebels or simply ‘wasted’. It is your decision and you shouldn’t let someone’s opinions dictate your behaviour. Earlier, getting a tattoo, having a child before marriage, and being bisexual were considered taboo. However today, people look at all of this as normal and nobody is judged. It’s 2020 and it is high time that we overcome this ‘supposedly called taboo’ topic of sex so that children aren’t scared to discuss it with their parents.
