Impact of shows like Crime Patrol and CID in raising awareness againsSt crime.

The media’s role in creating awareness regarding social situations, occurrences and causes is of utmost importance. Several times the media has been able to successfully bring the deficiencies of the public agencies to light and raise the level of social awareness. Crime has tormented civil society for centuries. Often media has been successful at reaching the corners where police and other crime control institutions have failed to. There are thousands of such cases which were discovered and solved because of the media’s efforts and contribution. Social awareness has been recognised to be the best weapon to fight against crime. We have all grown up watching our favourite ACP Pradyuman say “Daya, darwaaza tod do” and KD Pathak ask “Am I right or am I right?”. While these shows solved their cases with a unique sense of humour and a lot of broken doors, they were able to shed light on the increasing rate of crimes in India. Shows like Crime Patrol would often enact true crimes with dialogues of their own and presented the more gruesome angle of crime. Atrocities committed against children like kidnapping, child labour, child trafficking, etc. are also highlighted in such shows. These shows raised awareness regarding the importance of being safe and alert at all times. We can conclude that ‘crime shows’ have their own definition in terms of entertainment value and medium of social awareness. The shows are written around actual incidences and provide viewers insight into the crime. The aim of such shows is to warn and inform people about crime, albeit the effectiveness depends on how it is perceived by the viewers.
