Xenophobia and Asian hate

The Covid 19 pandemic which was first reported in the city of Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019, has led to an increase in acts and displays of prejudice, xenophobia, discrimination, violence, and racism against people of Asian descent and appearance around the world. Government leaders and senior officials in some instances have directly or indirectly encouraged hate crimes, racism, or xenophobia by using anti-Chinese rhetoric. Several political parties and groups, including the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Greece, France, and Germany have also latched onto the Covid- 19 crisis to advance anti-immigrant, white supremacist, ultra-nationalist, xenophobic conspiracy theories that demonize refugees, foreigners, prominent individuals, and political leaders. People from North-east, India, have reportedly faced increased discrimination and harassment due to their physical appearance, during this time. Northeast Indian students in Kirori Mal College, Delhi, have filed a complaint to college authorities about harassment at the hands of other students over the fears of coronavirus. Eight students from Northeast India at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai also alleged that they were subjected to racism and harassment. Muslim gatherings organised by the Tablighi Jamaat, which resulted in an increase of cases in India, triggered Islamophobic reactions and increased communal tension. Islamophobic hashtags began circulating shortly after the news broke in late March, and a wave of anti-Muslim violence was reported in April. Numerous incidences of racism and discrimination against those of Asian descent in Germany have been reported, the weekly magazine Der Spiegel has published a controversial cover that has been considered by some as blaming China for the outbreak fuelling xenophobia. In Moscow and Yekaterinburg, Chinese nationals are being targeted. According to an Ipsos MORI poll conducted in February 2020, 37% of Russian respondents would consider avoiding people of Chinese origin, the highest of the eight countries surveyed. A national report, funded by the Government of Canada and conducted as a collaboration with the Chinese Canadian National Council and the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice, revealed there were 600 documented anti-Asian incidents reported in the country since the start of the pandemic. There were several thousand incidences of xenophobia and racism against Asian Americans between 28 January and 24 February 2020, according to a tally compiled by Russell Jeung, professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. An online reporting forum called "Stop AAPI Hate" recorded "650 direct reports of discrimination against primarily Asian Americans" between 18 and 26 March 2020, this later increased to 1,497 reports by 15 April 2020, and most targets were of Chinese and Korean descents. On March 16, 2021, a shooting spree occurred at 3 spas or massage parlours in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian women, and one other person was wounded. Hundreds of people, in dozens of cities, took to the streets to demonstrate against violence toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders following the shooting in Atlanta. Pandemics create fear and uncertainty which can unleash underlying hostility that exists towards some groups. Racism is not stupidity or ignorance- racism is hate. Racists constantly find excuses to expound their hatred and in the current pandemic, they have found yet another excuse. Prejudice and hate are not innate. They are learned behaviours, and so can be unlearned. Stigmatization is cruel and counterproductive. We must stand up for cultural diversity. There is no real upside to a pandemic but it does serve as a powerful reminder that we are all in this together. We must remember that the crisis is a threat to every human being regardless of race, gender, nationality, or social status. We must therefore work together to halt the spread of the virus and hate among us.
