Slide 1: HATE SPEECH IS NOT OKAY. ‘Why can’t I say these words?’ ‘What’s wrong with saying a particular word to that person?’ ‘Don’t be so uptight!’ Are the common remarks most of us get when we correct an offensive statement. Saying ethnic slurs isn’t wrong, it’s wrong when YOU do not belong to that race. Ethnic slurs and racial slurs are the same things. ‘Why is it wrong though? ‘Aren’t we all just a big happy family?’’ Yes, we are, but name-calling in families is frowned upon. Slide 2: The n-word. Ah! The infamous n-word most commonly used as a joke by teenagers. Which are never funny by the way. Let me educate you as to why the n-word is not appropriate for everyone to use; People from all over the world carelessly use the n-word like it’s a world-renowned noun. Well, it’s not. The n-word is only and only appropriate when a black person says it. It is used as a general term of appreciation when said by a black person. Other people in the world will just have to use something else. :) Slide 3: Chini/ Ching-Chong/ Yellow/Chinki. Every Asian around the world is being blamed for the pandemic. Not every Asian is from China. Sometimes people forget to factor in the fact that many countries that house Asian people, that didn’t cause the Corona Virus. Asian hate has been going on for decades now, especially since the Covid-19 Pandemic. Calling a person ‘momo’ or ‘Chinese eyes’ doesn’t make you funny or popular, it makes you insensitive. Causing hate towards a person based on the way they look is outright wrong. Slide 4: Spic/Zorra/Puta. These are slurs used by people who want to degrade Mexicans and Hispanics. The words loosely translate to ‘Slut’, ‘Whore’, and other sexually derogatory terms. In a county like America, where many go to achieve their dreams, people are worried about being called mean things based on their race! Mexican Americans have been looked down upon by Americans for the past innumerable decades and have faced unimaginable difficulties and challenges. Yet, being publicly shamed remains their top insecurity. How can we call a country developed, when the citizens don’t feel safe in their own neighbourhoods? Slide 5: What I can do to reduce the usage of Ethnic Slurs around me. Using racial slurs doesn’t make you cool. Neither does it increase your value in society. If you hear a teenager around you, trying to impress their friends by cracking an embarrassing and unfunny joke, ignore them. But if you hear a racial slur followed by that hilariously lame joke, stop that person and explain why it is wrong. Explain why it is not comical to degrade people. It is we who can make a difference in the world. Make a change that makes you happy and makes NOBODY in the world feel bad. Being good is what matters.
